Katsina Troops Launch Operation Clean Sweep III After General’s Death

There are moments that shake an entire community and force authorities to respond with overwhelming force. The tragic abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar appears to be one of those moments.

In what security officials describe as a decisive response, the Defence Headquarters Joint Task Force North West has launched a fresh military campaign known as “Operation Clean Sweep III” across Matazu Local Government Area and several surrounding communities in Katsina State.

The operation, which commenced on Saturday, June 14, 2026, is not just another routine security exercise. It is a direct mission aimed at tracking down the armed groups believed to be responsible for the retired general’s kidnap and death while in captivity.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North West under Operation Fansan Yamma, troops have been deployed with a clear objective: dismantle the criminal networks operating within the region and deny them any opportunity to regroup.

For residents who have lived under the shadow of bandit attacks, the announcement signals a renewed determination by security forces to reclaim vulnerable areas and restore confidence among local communities.

The military says troops have already intensified operations on multiple fronts. Fighting patrols have been expanded, intelligence-led raids have been executed, and cordon-and-search missions are being carried out in locations identified as criminal strongholds. Clearance operations are also ongoing as soldiers move deeper into areas suspected to be serving as safe havens for armed groups.

Early reports from the field suggest the operation is already yielding results.

Security forces disclosed that several terrorist camps, logistics bases, and support structures were destroyed during coordinated offensives around Dikkawa Hills, Adua, Nasarawa, and Karaduwa. These locations have long been viewed as strategic hideouts used by criminal elements to coordinate attacks and maintain supply routes.

Military authorities described the initial outcomes as significant gains, emphasizing that the offensive remains active and will continue until those responsible for the retired general’s death are brought to justice.

While the full impact of Operation Clean Sweep III will become clearer in the coming weeks, one message from the military is unmistakable: the pursuit of the perpetrators is far from over, and security forces intend to sustain pressure on criminal networks operating across Katsina State.

For many observers, the operation represents more than a tactical military response. It is also a symbolic effort to demonstrate that attacks on citizens—regardless of status—will not go unanswered, and that those behind such crimes remain firmly in the sights of security agencies.
