A Night of Terror in Ikorodu: How an Ordinary Evening Turned Into Tragedy
What began as a routine day in Oreta, a quiet community in Ikorodu, Lagos, ended in bloodshed, heartbreak, and unanswered questions.
Residents are still trying to make sense of the horror that unfolded on Wednesday night when gunmen suspected to be cult members stormed the area, leaving three people dead and an entire neighbourhood traumatised.
Among the victims was 22-year-old Abdulmalik Bakare, a young man whose life was cut short in a wave of violence that many residents say could have been prevented.
Days after the attack, grief continues to hang heavily over the community. Shops that once buzzed with activity now tell a different story. Conversations are quieter. People glance nervously over their shoulders. The sense of safety many once took for granted has been shattered.
For Abdulmalik’s family, the pain is especially deep.
His father, Tunde Bakare, revealed that six suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident. While speaking with journalists, he expressed hope that justice would eventually be served.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer handling the matter assured the family that investigators would leave no stone unturned.
“The DPO said the case would be thoroughly investigated,” he explained.
Yet for many residents, that promise is only the beginning. What they truly want are answers.
The Incident That Allegedly Sparked the Violence
As details continue to emerge, residents believe the deadly attack may have been triggered by an earlier confrontation involving a trailer driver and a group of suspected street hoodlums along Gbogbo Road.
According to accounts from locals, tensions started building long before gunshots echoed through the community.
One resident, identified simply as Fasasi, claimed a trailer transporting a container was stopped during the afternoon by some youths demanding money from the driver.
The driver reportedly insisted that payment had already been made through other individuals overseeing activities around the area. What followed, residents say, was a heated dispute that quickly spiralled out of control.
During the altercation, one of the youths allegedly climbed onto the trailer. In the confusion that followed, he became trapped beneath the vehicle’s tyre and died.
Authorities reportedly treated the incident as an accident and attempted to calm tensions. But according to residents, emotions were already running high.
From Tension to Bloodshed
Hours later, as darkness settled over Oreta, the situation allegedly took a deadly turn.
Residents claim groups of armed men arrived on motorcycles around 8 p.m., moving through the community with frightening speed.
Then came the gunfire.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as people ran for safety while attackers allegedly fired indiscriminately.
One victim was reportedly preparing to close his shop when he was shot and killed.
Another heartbreaking casualty was said to be a physically challenged child who was simply eating when violence erupted.
A third victim, according to residents, had come to purchase fish and unexpectedly found himself caught in the middle of the chaos.
As bullets flew, shop owners scrambled to protect themselves and their businesses. Glass doors were smashed, properties damaged, and entire streets emptied within minutes.
For many families, survival became the only priority.
A Community Living in Fear
When reporters visited Oreta days after the attack, the emotional scars were impossible to miss.
Residents spoke of fear, uncertainty, and sleepless nights. Many remain worried about the possibility of further violence.
Several people reportedly fled the area immediately after the attack, while normal business activities were brought to an abrupt halt.
The tragedy serves as another reminder of how quickly local disputes can escalate into devastating violence, leaving innocent people to pay the ultimate price.
For now, families are mourning loved ones, community leaders are seeking calm, and investigators are under pressure to uncover exactly what happened and who should be held responsible.
Meanwhile, residents continue to wait for justice—and for the return of the peace that once defined their community.
As of the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official public statement regarding the incident. Attempts to reach police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi for comment were reportedly unsuccessful.
